Lugoff-Elgin defeats Beaufort 13-1. LE scored 7 runs in the first inning to put the game away. With two runners on, senior first baseman Kelly Graham hit a three run home run to right center to start the scoring. Two batters later, senior Sophie Holland had a solo home run to left to extend the lead to 4-0. Kellee Branham kept the inning going with a single to left and advanced to third on an errant throw by Beaufort’s catcher, after stealing 2nd base. Gracie Holland followed with an RBI single to left to push the lead to 5-0. Senior shortstop Erica Rawl then came to the plate and hit a two run shot to left to cap the scoring in the inning.
The Lady Demons would add on two additional insurance runs in the 5th. With runners on 2nd and 3rd (Curry, Rawl), Sophomore center fielder Savannah Grigsby was able to drive in the 8th run of the game on a RBI ground out to 2nd allowing Rawl to score from 3rd. With one out and Caitlyn Curry at 3rd, sophomore pitcher Bailey Douglas drove in Curry from 3rd, on a RBI ground out to 3rd, to push the lead to 9-0.
In the bottom of the 6th, Beaufort would finally get on the board with a solo home run by Savannah Mullen to make the score 9-1 in favor of Lugoff-Elgin. In the 7th inning, Lugoff-Elgin would score four more runs extending the lead to 12. After Rawl and Curry were able to reach on singles to right, followed by a ground out by Grigsby moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd, Bailey Douglas came to the plate and hit a three run shot to left. Kaley Goerlich followed up Douglas’s home run with a solo home run to right center to complete the scoring.

Defensively in the field, the Lady Demons played error free softball. Second baseman Caitlyn Curry had two great defensive plays, including a diving stop to throw out a runner on a bang-bang play at first in the 6th inning.
On the day, starting pitcher Bailey Douglas pitched 5 innings of shutout ball allowing only two singles, three walks, and had 5 strikeouts on the day, in the winning effort. In a relief role, Gracie Holland came in and limited Beaufort to one run on one hit with 4 strikeouts and two walks in two innings of work.
With the victory, Lugoff-Elgin will travel to region rival and defending AAA state champion Hartsville, who defeated Union last year, on Monday night at 6. The winner of Monday night’s game will host the AAAA Lower State Championship on Friday night and will only need to win once to advance to the AAAA State Championship Series, which begins a week from Monday. During the regular season, Lugoff-Elgin and Hartsville split their region contests with each team winning at home. Lugoff-Elgin won the first game 8-1 and Hartsville took the second one 6-3. Both teams finished the regular season with a 6-2 record in conference play.
