Having a relatively good week of tennis, LE was eager for their final region match of the season. A win would secure their second place finish, and a win was what they got.
#1 Singles: Spencer Hinton versus Mac Waldrop: (6-0)(6-2): Hartsville’s top player was unable to match the power that was coming off of Spencer’s racquet. Spencer stayed on the attack from start to finish leaving his opponent struggling to find a way into the match.
#2 Singles: Alex Hinton versus Jacob Prozzi: (6-0)(6-1): Though Alex is the youngest on the team, he continues to show why he deserves to be up in one of the top spots. Figuring out his opponent’s game early, Alex was steady and consistent in the dismantling of it. This was a fairly quick match with an early victory going to LE.
#3 Singles: Matthew Mills versus Duncan Crawley: (1-6)(6-7… 3): It took Matthew quite a long time to get into his match. Plagued with broken strings and broken racquets over the past few days, Matthew found it difficult to maintain his focus. By the time he was able to make a run at it in the second set, his opponent was able to find one more gear to outrun Matthew to the finish line.
#4 Singles: Holden Roberts versus Cooper Myers: (6-2)(6-0): Just like earlier in the week, the quickest match of the night was on court 4. This was once again a surprise to the coaching staff and to Holden who tends to be one of the last players off the courts. Moving his opponent around and making him hit from defensive positions, Holden flew through his match.
#5 Singles: Coby Morrison versus Cole Beasley: (6-2)(7-5): Coby had complete control of his match in the first set. Things got a little more interesting for everyone in the second set. Knowing they already had a win on court #3 and that all the other matches except for #2 doubles had already finished, Hartsville knew that this was an important one to take back if they were to have any chance on the night. With Hartsville serving to take the match to a second set tie-break, smart plays from Coby earned himself quadruple match points. He did not need that many though to get it done.
#2 Doubles: Evan Freier / Andrew Boone versus Jay Braddock / Mike Norris: (6-3)(6-1): Because of damage to one of the courts, Hartsville could only provide 5 courts for the night. Thanks to Holden’s quick match, the #2 doubles team did not have to wait too long. This is the one court where there was a changeup in Hartsville’s line up from last time. LE quickly assessed the new team they were facing, and they were able to win this one with a touch of power from the baseline and some aggressive net play.
This win solidified LE’s hold on second place in the region. It also means that we will get to host the first playoff match on April 26.
