The girls golf team advances to the 5A Lower State Qualifier next Monday on the strength of Michaelah Wise’s 79 and Tristan Ray’s 95. Their scores earned them All-Region honors. They finished sixth and seventh at the 5A Region 4 Qualifier that was played at Oak Hills.
Jessica Ni scored her personal best of 117, Kelsey Ham shot a 145 and Brooke Jackson 139. The team totaled 430 and was six strokes behind Region Runner-Up Spring Valley.
Neither the Spring Valley team nor the Lugoff-Elgin team had the depth to compete with Blythewood. All five players scored in the 70’s for Blythewood. Blythewood’s Ella Stalvey, an eighth grader, shot even par to earn the Region Individual Champion honors. Sumter’s Danae Brunson qualified individually to advance to Upper State, scoring 102.
“I am really proud of our team. Oak Hills is a difficult course to walk and except for a few holes where they could get on carts, they had to walk it all. And it was not super pleasant weather. When it wasn’t raining, it was hot,” said Coach Dommel. “I checked their scorecards and I don’t think a single player picked up at 10. They continued to play and the highest scores were 11. The maximum score was set at 10, but they elected to not pick up. This experience is so good for the team. However, we could not have advanced if the team did not have both Michaelah and Tristan scoring well today, ” added Coach Dommel.
The Lower State Qualifier will be played at Columbia Country Club. Region 4 is a split region with the first two teams headed to Upper State and the third place team to Lower State.
