Dr. Mike Armstrong, Ed.D., NBCT, NASE, CTBS, USAW, SPARQ serves  as an Assistant Athletic Director, the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach,  and an Assistant Football Coach working with the Offensive Line in his second year at Lugoff-Elgin High School.  Coach Armstrong has 28 years of coaching and teaching experience having previously coached at River Bluff, Spring Valley, Dorman and Irmo High Schools. He also coached collegiately at Georgia Tech as a graduate assistant strength coach on the 1990 NCAA National Championship Football Team and the University of South Carolina as an Assistant Strength Coach. Coach Armstrong was named the 2016/2017 4A SCHSSCA Strength Coach of the Year. Coach Armstrong served as the Optimal Performance Trainer for SC Midlands Volleyball Association. He holds National Board Certification, is certified by USA Weightlifting and SPARQ, Is certified by the National Association of Speed and Explosion, and is a Certified Tsunami Bar Specialist. Armstrong was honored as the 2002/2003 AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year.   In 2007 and 2015, he served as an assistant football coach at the Max Emfinger All-American Bowl in Shreveport and Lafayette, LA, respectively. He received a scholarship to play football collegiately for the University of South Carolina lettering in 1987 and 1988 while earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education. He also received a Master of Education from the University of South Carolina and earned his doctoral degree in education from the United States Sports Academy. Coach Armstrong and his wife, Erin, have five children; Clay (21- a United States Marine OOH-RAH!), Peyton (20- sophomore at Clemson University), Cole (19 – a freshmen FB player at North Greenville University), Bella (16-sophomore at LEHS) and Jack (7 – 2nd grader at Blaney Elementary).



Assistant Strength Coach- Garrett Knight

Coach Garrett Knight, MSS, NSCA, CTBS serves as Head Basketball Coach, Assistant Football Coach and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach in his seventh year at Lugoff-Elgin High School.  Coach Knight has 11 years of coaching and teaching experience, having previously coached at North Central and Heathwood Hall Episcopal School.  He is a Certified Tsunami Bar Specialist.  Coach Knight and his wife, Kathy, have four children; Taylor (19- Women’s Soccer at UNC- Asheville), Grayson (17- Sporting Kansas City, Cardinal Newman Schools), and Gabrielle & Gillian (5 year old twins, Lake Carolina Elementary).


Robert Ray

Student Assistant Strength Coach- Robert Ray

Robert Ray is a junior at Lugoff-Elgin high school and has been in strength and conditioning class for 3 semesters now.  Robert aspires to be a strength and conditioning professional after high school and is now serving as a student intern for the Strength and Conditioning program.
